Fr. Bohdan Hladio was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh where he performed with the Duquesne University Tamburitzans, a renowned Eastern European Folk Ensemble. He met his wife Tania Pidlysny in Toronto where they were married in 1984. Father’s heritage is Ukrainian, and Presvytera is of mixed Greek/Ukrainian heritage.
He was ordained priest in 1988 and has served parishes in Toronto (1988-1995), Hamilton (1995-2005), and Oshawa, Ontario (2008-2022) in addition to serving as Chancellor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada in Winnipeg from 2005 – 2008. Besides his pastoral responsibilities he has served on many church committees, has led spiritual retreats, and offered talks and presentations for the clergy and faithful of different Eastern Orthodox and other Christian Churches in Canada and the USA. Fr. Bohdan has written hundreds of articles for both ecclesiastical and secular newspapers and magazines, and a collection of his articles was published in 2009 by the Holy Dormition Monastery Press in Rives Junction, Michigan. His writings have also been published on the Public Orthodoxy site of the Orthodox Studies program at Fordham University in New York.
Fr. Bohdan completed a Master of Theological Studies degree at Trinity College in Toronto in 2021 specializing in Orthodox and Eastern Christian Studies, following which he began doctoral studies at the Toronto School of Theology. His research focuses on Eastern Orthodox Ecclesiology and the history and polity of Eastern Orthodoxy in North America. He has presented academic papers and had articles published in Europe and North America.
In April of 2024 Fr. Bohdan was received into the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada. Fr. Bohdan is a faculty member of the Patriarchal Toronto Orthodox Theological Academy under the auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada and lives in Hamilton, Ontario with his wife Presvytera Tania. They have three children and six grand-children.
