Our community came together this past weekend to honor Hellenic Independence Day with a series of meaningful events that underscored our shared heritage and values.
The festivities commenced on Saturday at the Hall of our Church, where students from our Greek School, teachers, and parents collaborated to create a vibrant celebration featuring poems and traditional dance, symbolizing our cultural heritage and unity.
The spirit of commemoration continued into Sunday at our church, where we were honored by the presence of Mayor Andrea Horwath of Hamilton as we observed this significant day. Mayor Horwath spoke eloquently about the enduring importance of Hellenic Independence Day, resonating deeply with our People's history.
Our Community's President, Nathan Hondronicols, delivered a poignant speech, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of our forebears and the legacy of freedom they bestowed upon us.
The event was further enriched by a captivating poem recited by Sophia Stypsianos, a talented student whose words touched the hearts of all present.
In addition to commemorating Hellenic Independence Day and observing the Sunday of Orthodoxy with the Litany of Icons, we also took a moment to honor the departed members of the Philoptochos Sisterhood with their annual memorial service. This solemn tribute served as a reminder of their enduring contributions and the values of kindness and compassion they embodied.
Throughout the weekend, the atmosphere was one of reverence and unity as we came together to celebrate our faith, community spirit and Hellenic heritage. We extend our gratitude to Mayor Horwath for joining us and to all who contributed to making this weekend's events a resounding success.
We now look to the future, to carry forward our religion, the spirit of unity, and the shared values of liberty that defined this weekend of commemoration and celebration.

Volunteers play a vital role in the functioning and success of Saint Demetrios Greek School. Our volunteers enrich the student's educational experiences and help support both teachers and students in the classrooms.
Volunteering is a wonderful way to become involved in the community and to help others. We have had many high-school students volunteer in order to receive their required volunteer hours, as well we have had many parents, retired teachers, and community members volunteer.
All volunteers in HWDSB schools must provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening with the acquisition of a police check. Safety is our top priority, and this is one step we take in order to ensure this. Upon completion of the police check, the Greek School Committee covers this expense with the submission of a receipt.
If you are interested in volunteering please contact Eirini Zacharidis at 905-308-1831.
